African American Fraternal Organizations

Based on the story of the friendship of Damon and Pythias, The Knights of Pythias were formed with the intent to promote friendship and relieve suffering, promoting civic pride and racial solidarity. The Knights of Pythias were mainstays in the African American business community.

The Grand Court Order of Calanthe was established as an auxiliary fraternal benefit society to support the Knights of Pythias.
