The Florida Theatre is an historic American movie theater located at 128 East Forsyth Street in Jacksonville, Florida. The theatre is one of only four remaining high-style movie palaces built in Florida during the Mediterranean Revival architectural boom of the 1920s. The Florida Theatre is an historic art nouveau movie theater located downtown Jacksonville. It was built in 1926-27, designed by architect Roy A Benjamin. Opened in 1927 this historic hall hosts shows ranging from ballet & opera to pop, jazz & country music.
The Florida Theatre opened in 1927 with a Moorish interior. It remained one of Jacksonville's finest theaters until it closed in 1980. Fortunately, the theater's value was recognized almost immediately and a restored Florida reopened in 1983 as an arts venue and remains open to this very day.
It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on November 4, 1982. On April 18, 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed the building on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places.
