Artist Biographical Information
Memphis Wood (1902-1989) was an artist and teacher whose life touched many people in Jacksonville. She came to Jacksonville in 1929 from Dacula, Georgia. For 33 years, she taught art at Landon High School, became intensely involved in the art community in Jacksonville, and nurtured a small art club into the beginning and eventual realization of the Jacksonville Art Museum. During her years in Jacksonville, Memphis Wood also helped to establish Crown Craftsmen Association. She taught at Jacksonville University for five years after her retirement from the Duval County School System. She also conducted classes at the Museum of Science and History and the Jacksonville Art Museum. Memphis served on the board of the Jacksonville Art Museum (now MOCA Jacksonville) for many years and in 1979 became one of its first Honorary Trustees. In 1985 she was recognized by the city of Jacksonville as the “First Lady of Art in Jacksonville” for her many years of dedicated contributions to the community in the fields of art and art education.
