Artist Biographical Information
Donatus was an artist of the 19th and early 20th centuries who divided his time between Naples, Italy, and New York. In the late 1880s, he enrolled in the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli and graduated in 1890. He then taught.
In New York, he thrived on privately commissioned portraits and murals for the Catholic Church. In Italy in 1908, he worked on the restoration of La Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo, an important 17th-century church in his hometown of Solofra. In 1911, he attended the International Art Congress of Art Educators in Rome, and later that same year, he had a painting included in the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
