Abstract
Background: Despite being integrated into dietetics education programs in 2009, many registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) do not fully utilize the Nutrition Care Process and Terminology (NCP/T). This study aimed to identify barriers and enablers to NCP/T use, develop, and assess the impact of a tailored training program.
Methods: Data from the 2017 International NCP/T Implementation Survey (INIS), involving 4,761 U.S.-based RDNs were analyzed. Descriptive and cross-tabulation analyses explored barriers, enablers and potential correlations between variables. Barriers and enablers were also obtained from focus group discussions with 38 RDNs using NVivo software. A training module was developed using Qualtrics software to address these findings. Paired sample t-test was used to analyze pre-and post-training surveys.
Results: INIS data showed an association between practice area, years of experience, and NCP/T use (p
Conclusion: The findings highlight persistent barriers and enablers. The training program improved RDNs' NCP/T knowledge, suggesting that targeted training can enhance NCP/T adoption. Future efforts should focus on overcoming these identified barriers.
