Pill Mills to Fentanyl: Tackling the Opioid Epidemic

The public was invited to attend the University of North Florida’s latest Diverse Perspectives Series event, “Pill Mills to Fentanyl: Tackling the Opioid Epidemic.”
Hosted by UNF’s Office of Public Policy Events, the free discussion was held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 22, 2024, in the Robinson Theatre.
Drug overdoses killed a record 112,000 Americans last year, with most of the deaths coming from synthetics opioids like fentanyl.
The following experts will weigh in on what the healthcare industry, nonprofit sector and criminal justice system can do to tackle the opioid epidemic:
- Rico Bodin (moderator), director of recovery connections, Gateway Community Services
- Lindsey Vuolo, vice president of health law and policy, Partnership to End Addiction
- Susan Pitman, founder and director of project and strategy, Drug Free Duval
- Katherine Hooper, associate instructor of psychology and director of UNF ‘s Behavioral Neuroscience Program
- Mitch Miller, John A. Delaney presidential professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice
The public can ask questions and share their thoughts during the event.
UNF’s Office of Public Policy Events hosts at least two events each semester that bring the campus and community together to discuss and debate important and timely issues from diverse perspectives.

Creating a University: University of North Florida Faculty and Staff Remember 35 Years

In recognition of the 35th anniversary of the founding of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. James B. Crooks, Professor Emeritus of the University presents an overview history of the University starting from its first day of classes on October 2, 1972. Basing his comments on the contents of oral history interviews he conducted with founding faculty, administrators and staff, Dr. Crooks describes the decisions, the developments and the many outstanding individuals who helped shape the unique "university in the woods." The lecture includes a video presentation, "2007, a UNF odyssey." The video includes a list of UNF people Crooks interviewed in preparing his lecture and contains recorded portions of interviews accompanied by still photos of locales and people from early campus life.

Allaire describes how the plaque honoring the first 49 donors to the University's foundation fund was dedicated on December 17, 1972, but later misplaced during a renovation of the building. Recently rediscovered in an electrical closet, the plaque has been reinstalled on the building. President Delaney outlines the changes to UNF since 1972. Dr. Carpenter addresses his years as the founding president of the University. Lovett, honors the culture of philanthropy that these early donors represent. Includes footage of the unveiling of the plaque, close ups of photographs from the original dedication ceremony and footage of the attendees following the ceremony.

Shapiro, Vice President of the Faculty Association, distributes awards to faculty members, including this year's distinguished professor award to Dr. Kunisi S. Venkatasubban. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Venkatasubban reflects on his career at UNF, the growth of the student body and the importance of faculty research to improving the quality of teaching. Dr. Venkatasubban describes the evolution of the science program at UNF. With the expansion of course offerings and increase in the numbers of students studying science, he urges that attention be paid to the need for more science faculty, more laboratory space and greater financial resources to support research. Dr. Venkatasubban looks forward to the addition of master level degrees in the sciences and the creation of collaborative degree programs.
