Between October 1972, when UNF first opened, and August 1985, the university had no on-campus housing for students. This was in large part because UNF opened as an upper division university, and offered only junior- and senior-level classes for individuals completing their bachelors’ degrees, along with several master’s degree programs. The average age of students who first enrolled at UNF was 31. Many of these individuals already had full-time jobs and families to support, and were not in need of university-sponsored housing. For those seeking to relocate close to campus, UNF provided assistance through the Office of Off-Campus Housing. This office (and later the Office of Special Student Services) served as an information resource for students. It published annual lists of affordable apartments in the area and the names of students who were seeking roommates, and its employees were available to meet with students who needed help in their housing search.
