Rosa Bonheur was a French artist, primarily a painter of animals and known for her artistic realism. Her most well-known paintings are "Ploughing in the Nivernais" and "oxen Ploughing in Nevers," first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1848 and now at the Musee d' Orsay in Paris. Both of these paintings are similar to this work, "Peasants with Their Carts," which depicts two teams of oxen ploughing the land and expresses the deep commitment to the land that was typical of the French Third Republic. It was commissioned by the government and was a winner of a First Medal at the Salon of 1849. Bonheur made a number of copies of the painting, one of which is in the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Bonheur is widely considered to be the most famous female painter of the 19th century.
