Artist Biographical Information
Sir Edwin H. Landseer was an English painter, sculptor and engraver, mainly of animal subjects. He had great skill in depicting animal anatomy, and tended to humanize his subjects to tell a sentimental story or moral. He also painted portraits and historical scenes.
He was a favorite painter of Queen Victoria, and his friends included the authors Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray. In 1858, he was commissioned to make the four huge bronze lions for the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1831 and knighted in 1850.
