Artist Biographical Information

Jerry N. Uelsmann (b. 1934) received his BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology and his MS and MFA from Indiana University. He taught at the University of Florida since 1960, and held the position of Graduate Research Professor from 1974. He retired in 1998. Uelsmann received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967 and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1972. He is a founding member of the American Society for Photographic Education; a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, Great Britain; and a trustee of the Friends of Photography. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in the United States and abroad over the past fifty years. He is included in the permanent collections of numerous museums worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Chicago Art Institute; International Museum of Photography, Rochester, NY; Victoria and Albert Museum in London; Biblioteque National in Paris; The National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC; the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; National Galleries of Scotland; National Museum of Modern Art , Kyoto, Japan; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; National Gallery of Canada; and the National Gallery of Australia. Uelsmann was named to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 1994.
