Artist Biographical Information
Charles “Charlie” M. Brown (1904-1987). Charlie Brown’s first contact with art was in Jacksonville in 1940 when he studied painting in a WPA (Work Progress Administration) program. He was first introduced to clay through a University of Florida extension class in 1951. For the next ten years, he made mostly non-functional earthenware. In the early sixties, Brown retired from the business world to devote himself full time to pottery. In 1964, he turned his energies almost exclusively to Raku techniques following a workshop held in his Mandarin studio by Hal Reigger. He is represented in numerous collections including: Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum; Jacksonville Art Museum, Mint Museum, Charlotte; Penland School of Crafts, and many others. In 1978, a retrospective of his ceramic creations was organized by the University Gallery at the University of Florida.
