Artist Biographical Information
Nofa Dixon received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She taught at the University of North Florida between 1993 and 2019 when she retired as a Professor Emerita. Prior to joining UNF, she served as the Chairperson of the Art Department at William M. Raines High School (1970-1982), the Director of Education at what was then the Jacksonville Art Museum, the forerunner of MOCA (1983-1994), and Artist-in-Residence of Duval County Public Schools (1997 -1999). She was recognized with the prestigious Art Educator of the Year Award by the Cultural Council in 1998. She is particularly known and rightly celebrated for conceiving the various mosaic and tile projects throughout campus. Selected exhibitions of her paintings and ceramic work include: The Florida Craftsmen Award Winner’s Exhibition at Florida Community College at Jacksonville; Artisan Gallery, Great Neck, New York; Gallery Contemporanea, Jacksonville; Five Star Art Show, Hilton Head, South Carolina; A Tribute to Women, Florida Community College at Jacksonville; Annual Florida Craftsman, Deland Art Museum and Tampa Museum; Skirting the Issues, Orlando City Hall; The Fine Art of Craft, Valencia Community College, Orlando; and Jacksonville Creates, Jacksonville Art Museum. Her work has been featured in 25 one or two-person juried exhibitions and in over 85 group shows. In addition, she has been invited to judge or curate over 75 exhibitions during her career.
