Artist Biographical Information

John L. Ward was a professor of art history at the University of Florida where he served in the School of Art + Art History for 44 years. He received his MA in Art History from Yale University, his MFA in painting from the University of New Mexico, and his PhD in Art History from Boston University. A book based on his dissertation was published by UMI Research Press in 1989 as American Realist Painting, 1945-1980. Professor Ward published studies on a number of other subjects, including perspective and picture perception, criticism of photography, and 15th century Netherlandish painting. As a painter, Ward exhibited in ten one-person shows and over 50 group shows. His large-scale paintings are done from direct observation, and he often paints his family, including his daughters, Alison and Jessica, who both grew up to be artists. His paintings are in numerous public and private collections in the United States.
