Artist Biographical Information
Charles Eastlake was a 19th-century painter, gallery director, collector, and writer. By 1830, he was a full member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and that decade proved to be his most productive as a painter. His subjects, particularly idealized female portraits, were particularly popular. Traveling widely, he became close friends with English Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner and portraitist Sir Thomas Lawrence. From the 1840s, Eastlake devoted increasing amounts of time to writing about art, including his own "Materials for a History of Oil Painting," a book that remains widely consulted today.
