Description

This painting is an unfinished oil portrait copied from an 1830 original painting by Sir John Watson Gordon. On the verso, or back, of the painting is a stamp dating it to around 1860-1880. Sir John Watson Gordon was a Scottish portrait painter and President of the Royal Scottish Academy. Gordon was very successful in rendering acute observant character. The painting's subject, Sir Walter Scott, was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, poet and historian, and many of his works remain classics in both English and Scottish literature.
