The presentation of Jesus in the Temple and the Temple in Jerusalem was meant to officially induct him into Judaism. In the Gospel of Luke, Mary and Joseph took the child Jesus forty days after birth to complete Mary's ritual purification after childbirth and to perform the redemption of the firstborn son in obedience to the Torah.
