Description

Two distinctive flowers symbolize death and life at the Church of Our Savior, Jacksonville, Florida. At left are white roses. The color illustrates Jesus' purity and innocence. And the five petals stand for the wounds Jesus received, on his hands and feet and in his side.

At the right are passion flowers, used by 17th century monks as a teaching device. The three-part stigma represents the three nails of the crucifixion; the pointed leaves are for the spear that pierced Jesus' side; and the 10 petals stand for the 10 disciples who stayed true to Jesus – except for Peter, who denied him, and Judas, who betrayed him.
