Description

The action of the opera takes place in the royal palace, the cave of the Sorceress, the grove, and the ship harbor. The widowed Queen Dido entertains the Trojan Prince Aeneas who has been shipwrecked on the shore of Carthage while on his way to Troy. Dido and Aeneas fall in love, but their courtship is interrupted by conspiring witches who plot to destroy Dido's happiness. The head Sorceress conjures a storm while the royal couple is hunting. Amid the confusion, as the courtiers scurry back to town, a witch impersonating the messenger god Mercury orders Aeneas to set sail for Italy. Aeneas reluctantly obeys and eventually abandons Dido. The broken-hearted Queen cannot bear her lover's betrayal and commits suicide. The opera ends as her death is lamented by a chorus of mourning cupids.
