Abstract

Students must be proficient readers of nonfiction texts to be successful in school and life. Since engaging students in this genre can be challenging, this article focuses on how students can respond digitally and socially to nonfiction through the use of free, secure social networks. Not only can students become more engaged in learning when using these networks, but their technology knowledge can increase as well. An overview of four social networks is included, along with helpful information that teachers need to know as they begin to use the networks. This article presents interesting application ideas for using social networks with nonfiction that teachers can immediately incorporate into their classrooms.
