Madonna and Child is a 19th-century copy of "Madonna della Seggiola," hanging in the Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy. This painting depicts Mary holding the baby Christ with John the Baptist in the background looking over the baby's shoulder. In 1858, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote that the original Raphael Madonna was "the most beautiful picture in the world" after seeing hundreds of copies of the painting.
