Justus Sustermans was born and trained in Antwerp but spent the majority of his career in Italy, where he served as portraitist and history painter to the Medici Grand Dukes of Florence and other noble patrons. The etching is most likely based on a drawing made by van Dyck during his own visit to Italy in 1621-23. The style of Sustermans' hair and costume differs somewhat from that of other sitters in the Iconography, reflecting the influence of Italian fashion.
