Groundbreaking for the University Conference Center, April 18, 1997

Speakers describe the new conference center and comment on its role in the continuing growth of the campus. They describe the positive impact the center will have on both the campus and the city of Jacksonville. In addition to the Division of Continuing Education and Extension, the University Center is planned to house the Institute of Police Technology and Management, the Florida Institute of Education, the Institute of Government, and the Small Business Development Center.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. A. David Kline, provides introductions to the speakers and makes remarks on the importance of good university citizenship. Dr. Chris Rasche, President of the Faculty Association, presents teaching and advising awards as well as the distinguished professor award to Dr. E. Allen Tilley. Dr. Tilley's distinguished professor lecture focuses on the large number of adjunct faculty utilized by the University and the necessity of providing better salaries and support for them. President of the University, Dr. Adam Herbert, in his state of the university speech, describes the importance of UNF moving forward from its 25th anniversary celebration to reinvent the University to fit future needs and prepare for accreditation. Dr. Herbert believes that the University has a mandate to provide the transforming power of education to the community.

President of the University, Adam Herbert, welcomes the faculty to the academic year and highlights his priorities for the coming year. He describes an initiative to share the story of UNF on a wider basis in preparation for a major fundraising program. Herbert cites raising faculty salaries and upgrading campus technologies as priorities. Dr. Herbert introduces UNF's newly appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Alan Campbell Ling. In his presentation, Dr. Ling describes his belief that learning is a joint effort between faculty, administrators, and students. He emphasizes the importance of quality faculty to the growth of the University. Dr. Charles M. Galloway, Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs, provides welcome remarks and introductions. Includes introduction of the new faculty by the academic deans.

Dedication of J. J. Daniel Hall, February 1, 1991

University of North Florida

The dedication of J.J. Daniel Hall (Administration Building) is scheduled for Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. outside the second floor (front) entrance. A plaque honoring Jaquelin James Daniel will be unveiled at that time.

"We believe that naming our administration building after J. J. Daniel will provide appropriate and well-deserved recognition for the high standards which were the hallmark of his life,"said President Adam W. Herbert.

Daniel, an outstanding Jacksonville resident exemplified community service. For more than 15 years he served on the Board of Regents and on its predecessor, the Board of Control. Daniel's leadership was instrumental in the founding of this university. He died last year.

Mrs. Page Daniel and her two daughters as well as a number of family friends are expected to attend the dedication. DuBose Ausley, Board of Regents member, will deliver a tribute address followed by the plaque unveiling. Daniel also will be awarded, posthumously, the E. T. York Distinguished Service Award for his lifelong commitment to higher education in Florida.
