Carnegie Free Library, Cordele, GA.
Cordele is located in the heart of Georgia, 60 miles south of Macon and 100 miles north of the Florida state line. Founded in 1888, Cordele is the seat of Crisp County.
Beginning in 1898 Andrew Carnegie, a steel magnate and philanthropist, donated thousands of dollars to establish libraries across Georgia. The Carnegie library in Cordele, which opened in 1915, became the first library in the state to offer countywide service. It was built with classical architectural elements including a pediment, two pillars framing the arched entrance.
