Dorchester Academy near Midway, Georgia is a historic site. The Dorchester Academy Boys' Dormitory on the site was built in 1935, was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and was declared a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 2006. The dormitory historic site is significant for its association with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Citizen Education Program. The program worked toward attaining equality for blacks in the American South . It is located in a rural area of northeastern Georgia, within the town of Midway. Dorchester Academy was founded by the American Missionary Association (AMA) following the Civil War as a primary school for black children. When the Academy ceased operating as a school in 1940, the innovative spirit of the institution continued with the opening of a community center housed in the old boys' dormitory. At the height of the civil rights movement, Dorchester Academy hosted Citizen Education Workshops sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
