The marker reads: "CHASE STREET -- Col. Wm. H. Chase, Construction Engineer, Pensacola Harbor defenses (Forts McRee, Barrancas, Redoubt, Pickens 1828-54). Captured Navy Yard for Florida Forces, Jan. 12, 1861. Ordered to West Point 1856, resigned Commission to become President Alabama-Florida R.R. Appointed Major-General Commanding State Troops, Pensacola 1861. Died at home SW Corner Palafox and Wright Sts., Feb. 8, 1870. Chase Street commemorates his name.
