Henry Beard Delany And Emma Beard Delaney
Brien Laing
Henry Beard Delany and Emma Beard Delaney were two African-Americans who rose from the obscurity of an enslaved family to achieve distinguished success in their individual lives. A period of time does not portray a history. To achieve that, one needs ideas, theories, and assumptions. There must be a concept with a structure systematically laid out, which reaches points of view leading to firm conclusions that allow the recording of this history of two dynamic African-Americans. This study is an examination of two remarkable lives. Theirs is a story of dignified control over their destinies, displaying only rare flinching from despondency and failure. Both achieved lofty success accompanied by some disappointment. This study is an opportunity to educate those within several specific related communities about the road to personal success chosen by two self-driven individuals. They successfully dedicated their lives to the service of God and their people, and achieved their objectives with quiet dignity and perseverance. They asked no special favors, nor sought acclaim or reward. This study is an effort to examine the social and racial paradigms which impacted the time frames of their respective lives. It responds to many questions posed as to how these young African-Americans, one born a slave and one born free, rose from subjugation and led lives filled with achievements despite the adversities suffered by their people. Perhaps the simple, constant reminder from Henry's grandmother was one of their principal motivators, "I am just trying to try." PALMM

A Charge to Keep : Brewster Hospital, Brewster Methodist Hospital, Brewster Hospital School of Nursing, Brewster-Duval School of Nursing, 1901-1966
B. J. Sessions
A great loss was felt by the Black community in Jacksonville when Brewster Hospital School of Nursing and Brewster-Duval School of Nursing closed. The closing of the schools was followed by the phasing out of Brewster Methodist Hospital, the only private hospital for Negroes in Jacksonville, Florida. Integration contributed to the closing of the schools and the hospital. The Brewster and Community Nurses Alumni Association voted to preserve the history of the schools of nursing and the hospital by recording it in book form. The History Committee was appointed. Research, collection, and categorization of information and materials were initiated. Research for the book has come by word of mouth, personal experiences, written articles, library sources, hospital records, nurses, doctors, patients, citizens and women of The Methodist Church. We want to show how the sick were cared for then and who did the caring from the early nineteen hundreds through the nineteen sixties. The women of the Methodist Episcopal Church, North, and the Division of Christian Service who made the school and hospital a reality, we acknowledge gratefully. PALMM.

A Report On Fort Diego, Palm Valley St. Johns County, Florida
William M. Jones
Fort Diego, an 18th century fortified ranch house located in the Palm Valley Section of St. Johns County, Florida, is featured in histories relative to Northeast Florida. Since, however, the actual site of this fort has not been established, it shall be the purpose of this report to point out the place where it was likely situated. In order to bring this report into proper focus, however, it will be necessary first to discuss the activities of "Diego Espinosa," the builder of the fort; second to describe the attack on this fort by General Oglethorpe in 1740; and, last to present documentary and material evidence relative to this place. At this time, it ·should be pointed out that the present Palm Valley Section was originally known as "Diego," presumably named after Diego Espinosa. In time, it was called simply, "Dago," and the nearby seashore "Dago Beach." PALMM

History of Jacksonville, Florida and Vicinity 1513 to 1924
T. Frederick Davis
Two times there was a wholesale destruction of Jacksonville's official records-in the War Between the States and by the fire of May 3, 1901. The author's effort in this work was to collect all of the available authentic matter for permanent preservation in book form. The record closes as of December 31, 1924. The record is derived from many sources-long forgotten books and pamphlets; old letters and diaries that have been stored away as family memorials of the past; newspapers beginning with the St. Augustine Herald in 1822 (on file at the Congressional Library at Washington) fragmentary for the early years, but extremely valuable for historical research; almost a complete file of local newspapers from 1875 to date; from the unpublished statements of old residents of conditions and outstanding events within the period of their clear recollection; and from a multitude of other sources of reliability. The search through the highways and the byways for local history was in the spare moments of the author stretching over a period of a score of years, a pastime "hobby" with no idea of making money out of it. No attempt has been made to discuss the merits of any incident, but only to present the facts, just as they were and just as they are, from the records and sources indicated. Includes maps and illustrations. PALMM
