Abstract

International Research Symposium Exhibitor and Project of Merit

For hundreds of years, Christianity has made a huge impact on Latin America with at least 90% of people claiming to be part of one of its various denominations. This impact can be seen even in minority communities like the Deaf community. Historically, many churches had a tendency to shun the Deaf population due to the idea of the individual or family sinning greatly. However, this mindset began to shift once Deaf schools were established and churches began to welcome Deaf people into their services. Going forward, this poster will look at how Christianity impacts the Deaf communities in 12 Spanish and Non-Spanish speaking countries in Latin America. Specifically, the impacts from foreign ministries or individual missionaries, local churches with their services and interactions, and Deaf school establishments. Overall, these impacts were positive and included aspects like establishing schools in certain locations, establishing well-known organizations, or printed materials. On the other hand, some impacts were negative and focused on lack of accessible church services or continued negative societal views.
