Abstract

Abstract

Diabetes can be an overly complicated chronic illness that not only affects a person's physical health but may additionally affect their mental well-being. Screening for depressive symptoms in individuals with diabetes in an endocrine office may be helpful in the early detection and treatment of depression in people diagnosed with type I and type II diabetes.

Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate if administering the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) form to those who have type I or type II diabetes in an endocrinologist's office setting can help detect symptoms of depression in those who have chronic conditions such as diabetes.

Method: The PHQ-9 screening tool was used to grade depressive symptoms within an endocrinologist's office. The PHQ-9 was filled out by patients prior to seeing the health care provider.

Results: One hundred and thirty-five forms were completed (n=135) for this screening. The participants were between 18-85 years of age, with a median age of 64, and a standard deviation of 13.376. There were 75 females and 59 males that participated in the survey. The median hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) was 7.0, ranging from 5.1-13.3. The PHQ-9 scores ranged between 0-26 with a median score of 3. Depression scores include none =88 (65.2%), mild=18 (13.3%), moderate=17 (12.6%), moderate-severe=10 (7.4%), and severe 2 (1.5%). There was a significant relationship between task difficulty and depression(p=
