Eastman's Southern Railway depot was built around 1906, when cotton was replacing timber as the area's economic mainstay. The town developed after the Civil War along the tracks of Southern Railway predecessors Macon & Brunswick Railroad and East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia Railroad.
